Aim and objectives

CEGEO as the Geotechnical group of CERENA, develops applied research in Mining and Geotechnical Works, in the fields of:

• Geomechanics;

• Environmental Geotechnics.

The aim is the creation of new engineering practices, or enhancing existing ones, increasing their competitiveness and sustainability.

The research methodologies used include:

• Physical modeling;
• Numerical tests;
• Laboratory tests;
• In situ tests.

The exploitation of mineral resources in Portugal represents a significant volume of business in terms of exports. Given the difficult socio-economic conjecture, is considered of fundamental importance to good engineering practices for the proper utilization of raw materials, under an economic perspective, ensuring the sustainability of the industry with high standards of quality, safety and economy.

Regarding Geotechnical Works, it is easily understandable that the success of its implementation, as well as good performance throughout its useful life, depends primarily on rock and soil masses characterization.
